BIO

Sara Mericle is a ceramic artist based in Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang (Montréal) that creates evocative, uncanny forms blending archival and futuristic notions of time, space and matter. Her work appears both fragile and permanent while highlighting the formal and psychological tensions between organic and inorganic subjects. These tensions explore the uncertainty we face within ecosystems and the indeterminate aspects of all creation. Her technical detail and delicate use of materials contrasts with the transformative, fluid and abstract nature of her work. The nuanced impressions cast by her work are both mutable and immutable, and speaks to our shared primordial past and our fragile, interconnected future.

Mericle has been an artist in residence at the Medalta International Artists Centre (Medicine Hat, AB, 2024), CASA (Lethbridge, AB, 2023), and Guldagergaard International Ceramics Research Center (Skælskør, Denmark, 2022). She has presented the solo exhibition Infinite Vessel (2024), and participated in group shows at Projet Casa (2024), Art Mûr (2023), Ada X (2023), V.A.V. Gallery (2022), and Eastern Bloc (2022). Her practice has been supported by grants and awards from Concordia University (2021-2024) and she has collaborated on projects funded by the Canada Council for the Arts.

Her recent works explore the reuse of ceramic waste as an alternative material source, and she works within a collective that explores the use of local materials. In 2023-2024 she worked as a Project Coordinator at Concordia University to advance sustainable systems within the field of ceramics and develop research, community projects, and workshops.
